What the job involves
We start by confirming what your system actually needs to be controlled: single stage cooling, two stage heat, a heat pump with auxiliary heat, or a dual fuel setup that switches between a heat pump and a propane furnace. Then we shut off power, document the existing wiring, mount the new thermostat and configure it for your equipment. Before we leave we run a heating cycle and a cooling cycle, check that the reversing valve and backup heat respond correctly, and walk you through the screens.
What we check and install
Wiring is the usual sticking point. Many older hill-country homes have four or five conductors at the wall and no common wire, so we either pull new cable, use the spare conductor, or fit an adapter at the air handler. We also check that the low voltage transformer can carry the load, that the thermostat sits away from a sunny wall or a draft, and that any humidity or ventilation accessory you have is wired to the right terminals rather than left disconnected.
How we decide it is the right call
A smart thermostat is worth doing when your equipment can use the extra staging and scheduling, and when you actually want remote control from your phone. If your system is on its last season, or if the real problem is a failing capacitor or a low refrigerant charge, a new thermostat will not fix it and we will say so. Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump and propane furnace?
Usually yes, but the thermostat has to support dual fuel and be configured for it. We set the changeover so the furnace handles the coldest hours and the heat pump carries milder weather instead of running strip heat.
My new thermostat needs a C wire and I do not have one. Now what?
We either use a spare conductor already in the wall, run new low voltage cable, or install an adapter at the air handler. Which one we pick depends on how the existing wiring was run in your home.
Can a smart thermostat control my wood stove backup?
No. A wood stove is not wired to the thermostat, so it stays manual. What we can do is set the thermostat so your central system does not fight the stove heat and short cycle.
